ABSTRACT:
A process for producing C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 alkyl substituted o-hydroxybenzoic acid esters comprising forming an anhydrous alkali metal phenolate-organic carrier mixture, carboxylating the phenolate by contacting the mixture with CO.sub.2 and reacting the resultant dialkali metal salt with 1 equivalent of an anhydrous acid/mole of salt and at least 1 mole of C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 alkyl chloride per mole of salt.
