A composition and method of making macrocyclic aryl ether ketones useful in the preparation of high molecular weight resins. Macrocyclic aryl ether ketone compositions having structural units of the formula ##STR1## wherein n is an integer from about 2 to about 20, are prepared by contacting a dihalo compound of the formula ##STR2## wherein X is a halogen with a compound of the formula
