ABSTRACT:
A runner for hot metal as from a blast furnace is formed from a series of interconnected modular units which are prefabricated from refractory based materials in layers of different densities resulting in a calculable exposure life determined by the density and the amount and temperature of the molten metal handled by the runner. The modular units are formed from a mixture including aluminum oxide, clay, refractory cement and phosphoric acid that has a known life dicated by the density of compaction of the layers of the material in the finished product.
