ABSTRACT:
A powdered detergent suitable for use in home laundry machines contains (1) an acid component which provides an initial wash solution with a pH of 1-4 and (2) a coated alkali-supplying substance which neutralizes the acid wash solution within a period of about 2 to 25 minutes. The compositions may be free of phosphates and avoid the problem of ash build-up on fabrics usually caused by carbonate-based non-phosphate detergents.
