ABSTRACT:
The antireactive-antiasthmatic effect of inhaled loop diuretics is potentiated by the use of a combination of a loop diuretic and a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug as an inhalant for combating asthma. The use of a cyclooxygenase inhibitor as the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug is preferred, particularly preferred is the use of furosemide as the loop diuretic. Especially advantageous is the use of piretanide as the loop diuretic. Particularly preferred is the use of acetylsalicylic acid as the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug.
The most remarkable finding of this invention is the excellent and steady protective effect afforded by the combination of the two drugs in the patients with late asthmatic reactions between the seventh and eighth hour, when the effect of treatment with either drug alone appeared to be progressively decreasing.
