A polyphenylene ether having at least one functional end group of the formula: ##STR1## in which R is a divalent C.sub.1-12 aliphatic group, n is 0 or 1, and R.sub.5 is hydrogen, a C.sub.1-8 alkyl group or a hydroxy-C.sub.2-8 -alkyl.
