ABSTRACT:
A polyphenolic-derivative chelating agent derived from lignin, lignin-derived, or lignin-containing materials. The chelating agent is derived by treating the starting material at acidic conditions, followed by oxidative degradation of the acid-treated starting material. The chelating agent has a functional group composition including about 24-29% COOH, about 2.0-3.0% OH(phenolic), and about 17-19% NO.sub.2, by weight, and an average molecular weight of at least about 400.
