ABSTRACT:
Polypentabromostyrene with a bromine content of 76% to 80%, which is plastic at a temperature of 280.degree. C. and is thermally decomposed at a temperature of about 400.degree. C., can be produced by reacting pentabromophenylethyl bromide with an alkali metal hydroxide or carbonate in an alcoholic solvent and subsequently by catalytically initiating polymerization. The polypentabromostyrene is useful as a flame retardant for thermoplastic synthetic resins.
