ABSTRACT:
In a plural-beam optical head, a linearly polarized light is generated and the linearly polarized light is divided into a plural light beams by the light beam dividing device which is a substantially right triangular prism formed of single-axis crystal. The prism has its inclined surface defined as a total reflection surface and its two sides substantially orthogonal to each other defined as an entrance surface and an exit surface, and is disposed so that the direction of the main axis of the crystal of the prism may form any other angle than 0 degree with respect to all of the direction of the plane normal to the total reflection surface, the direction of the normal to the incidence wave front onto the total reflection surface, the direction of the normal to the reflected wave front from the total reflection surface, the direction of the normal to a plane determined by the normal to the incidence wave front and the normal to the reflected wave front, and the direction of the line of intersection between the plane and the total reflection surface.
