ABSTRACT:
The photochlorination of alkanols, C.sub.4 and higher, is advantageously carried out in an aqueous buffered solvent whereby chlorination can predominate over oxidation. The photochlorination of cyclopentanol in an aqueous acetate buffer at a pH of about 5 forms 5-chloropentanal quantitatively.
