Compounds which are useful as inhibitors of cholesterol biosynthesis and thus as hypocholesterolemic agents are provided which have the structure ##STR1## including salts thereof, wherein R is OH, lower alkoxy or lower alkyl; R.sup.x is H or alkyl;
