A flame retarder containing a phosphate obtained by reacting a compound represented by the general formula (II): ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are, the same or different, a straight or branched-chain alkyl group having 1 to 8 carbon atoms, an alkenyl group having 2 to 8 carbon atoms, an optionally substituted aryl group having 6 to 12 carbon atoms, an alicyclic hydrocarbon group having 3 to 12 carbon atoms or an aralkyl group having 7 to 12 carbon atoms,
