ABSTRACT:
##STR1## Novel phenyl naphthalenes of general formula (I) wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are selected from C.sub.1-15 alkyl, alkoxyl, perfluoroalkyl, perfluoroalkoxyl and alkynyl, R.sub.1 may also be CN and R.sub.2 may also be fluorine or NCS; m is 0, 1 or 2 provided that if R.sub.1 is alkyl or alkoxyl and R.sub.2 is alkyl, alkoxyl, perfluoroalkyl or CN then m is 1 or 2. These have liquid crystalline characteristics and may be used as constituents of both nematic and smectic C liquid crystal materials.
