Novel substituted .alpha.,.alpha.-diphenylethylene derivatives of formula I ##STR1## in which R.sub.1 and R.sub.4 independently of one another each represents hydrogen, hydroxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 -alkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 -alkoxy substituted by from 1 to 7 halogen atoms, alkoxyalkoxy having a total of from 2 to 6 carbon atoms, C.sub.3 -C.sub.5 -alkenyloxy or C.sub.3 -C.sub.5 -alkynyloxy;
