ABSTRACT:
A peristaltic pump10for use in ophthalmic surgery includes a housing12, a pump head14having plurality of rollers16, a backing plate18attached to the housing12, and a length of surgical tubing50. The rollers16and backing plate18cooperate to pinch the length of surgical tubing50to peristaltically pump fluids from a surgical site to a collection bag64. At least one of the pump head14and the backing plate18is moveable, during operation of the pump10, from a tubing pinched position to a tubing vent position. This movement allows the tubing50to be vented by removing the pinched closure of the tubing50.
