A method for gas-phase oxidation of an organic compound such as acrolein is provided, which includes oxidizing the organic compound with an oxidizing agent in the presence of a catalyst, to produce a product such as acrylic acid, wherein the catalyst includes a multimetal oxide material having at least two phases and of the formula III
