ABSTRACT:
In the oxidation of a liquid alcohol and/ketone with nitric acid to a carboxylic acid, especially of a mixture of cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone to adipic acid, temperature is controlled during the reaction in which gas is evolved by contacting the reaction mixture with a plurality of cooling surfaces vertically spaced from each other in such a way that the turbulence induced by the reaction inhibits the formation of bubbles upon the cooling surfaces. The cooling surfaces may be horizontally disposed banks of tubes through which water is passed.
