ABSTRACT:
A method for preventing the sickling of sickle cells in a patient having sickle cell disease, the method which comprises administering to the patient a therapeutically effective amount of a compound having the formula: ##STR1## wherein X.sup.- is selected from the group consisting of iodide, chloride, bromide, hydroxyl, nitrite, phosphate and acetate.
