ABSTRACT:
A process for preparing a metal oxide having groups of the general formula Iin-line-formulae description="In-line Formulae" end="lead"?—O1+n—SiR12−n—CH2—Y  (I)in-line-formulae description="In-line Formulae" end="tail"?which involves reacting a solid having OH groups on the surface with silanes of the general formula IIin-line-formulae description="In-line Formulae" end="lead"?RO1+n—SiR12−n—CH2—Y  (II)in-line-formulae description="In-line Formulae" end="tail"?whereY is a functional group —NRx2, —OC(O)C(R)═CH2, -halo, or —NCO. The reaction takes place rapidly and at reasonable temperatures and avoids production of significant quantities of decomposition products or byproducts, providing a metal oxide with a high proportion of Y functional groups.
