ABSTRACT:
An optically active compound represented by the following formula (I): ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 denotes a linear or branched alkyl group having 1-18 carbon atoms optionally including one or non-neighboring two or more methylene groups which can be replaced with --X-- or ##STR2## with the proviso that X denotes O or S and Y denotes halogen; R.sub.2 denotes a linear alkyl group having 4-8 carbon atoms: and C* denotes an optically active asymmetric carbon atom. The mesomorphic compound is effective for providing a ferroelectric liquid crystal composition showing improved response characteristics and also effective for suppressing occurrence of reverse domain.
