ABSTRACT:
The present invention provides novel optically-active aliphatic .alpha.-halogen substituted carboxylic acid 4'-(4-alkoxybenzyloxy)biphenyl thioester compounds of the general formula: ##STR1## wherein R represents a n-alkyl radical having C.sub.8 to C.sub.15, carbon atoms, C* represents an asymmetric carbon atom, X represents a halogen atom and R' represents ##STR2## and process for the preparation thereof. The novel biphenyl thioester compounds provided according to the present invention are usable as a dopant or a base material for liquid crystal blending, thereby improving the properties of LCD.
