ABSTRACT:
An optical system includes a refractive index distribution type optical element which configuration is formed to be a parallel plane plate. The refractive index distribution is provided in the radial direction perpendicular to an optical axis of the optical system, in which the refractive index is increased and a color dispersion value .nu.d is decreased as a location on the optical element is farther away from the optical axis. The optical element is combined with a lens or a plurality of lenses, the refractive index of which is homogeneous, so that a chromatic aberration generated by the homogeneous refractive index lens can be compensated. When the refractive index distribution in the radial direction perpendicular to the optical axis is expressed by the following expression,
