A scanning sensor system100,methods and kits for use thereof including a switchable light source102, a detector106,a substrate104and a plurality of optical sensing sites112are provided. Substrate104is coupled to and in optical communication with switchable light source102and detector106. Additionally, substrate104includes a plurality of substantially parallel excitation waveguides108,and a plurality of substantially parallel collection waveguides110,the excitation waveguides108and collection waveguides110crossing to form a two-dimensional array and optical communication with intersection regions114at each crossing. The plurality of optical sensing sites112are each in optical communication with an intersection region114.
