ABSTRACT:
An optical fiber magnetometer employing balanced magnetostrictive oscillations to measure D.C. and low frequency ambient magnetic fields. The magnetometer includes an optical fiber interferometer 18 having a laser beam input 10 for travel through first and second arms 14, 16 of the interferometer. First and second magnetostrictive rods 20, 22 forming a matched pair are coupled to the respective optical fibers in the first and second interferometer arms 14, 16. An applied oscillating magnetic field is applied to each of the rods 180.degree. out of phase. The D.C. or low frequency magnetic field to be measured, when combined with each of the applied fields, induces a change in the path length of each of the interferometer arms. The difference in the change in path length of each of the interferometer arms is determined to develop a signal representative of the D.C. to low frequency ambient magnetic field.
