ABSTRACT:
An optical element1comprises an optical substrate having a lens2, projections4aand4b, and a handle6. The lens2is provided to the roughly rectangular handle6at a predetermined position thereon, while the projections4aand4bare provided to the handle6at the respective positions separate from the lens2by a predetermined distance and each have a semi-cylindrical shape that extends from a bottom of the handle6. An overall size of an arc shape of each of the projections4aand4bis equal to an overall size of an optical fiber with which the optical element1is to be coupled optically. When mounting the optical element1on a support substrate having a mounting groove therein, the projections4aand4bbutt against the mounting groove, thereby positioning the optical element1in a direction perpendicular to an optical axis.
