ABSTRACT:
An optical device1has a photodetecting element6, an optical waveguide layer4containing core portions4ato4cextending in directions crossing a layer thickness direction and a clad portion4hcovering the core portions4ato4c, and an optical waveguide substrate2having the end face4gof the core portion4coptically coupled to the photodetecting element6on the side surface2athereof. The optical waveguide substrate2has substrates3and5disposed so that the principal surfaces3aand5aface each other. The optical waveguide layer4is provided between the substrate3and the substrate5. The photodetecting element6is mounted on the mount area2con the side surface2aof the optical waveguide substrate2. The mount area2cis set to contain the end face4gof the core portion4c, a part of the side surface3bof the substrate73and a part of the side surface5bof the substrate5. Accordingly, in the optical device, the optical coupling efficiency between a semiconductor optical element such as a light emission element and a photodetecting element and an optical waveguide can be enhanced.
