An optical data link20comprises a mounting member22, an optical element assembly24, a circuit board26, and a spacer32. The PGA substrate22has a substrate22aand a plurality of electrically conductive pins22b. The circuit board26has a pair of surfaces. Electronic components34ato34eare mounted on the pair of surfaces. The optical element assembly24includes a semiconductor optical element24f. The semiconductor optical element24fis connected to an electrically conductive layer on the circuit board26. The spacer32functions so as to distance the circuit board26from the PGA substrate22. Since the circuit board26is distanced from the PGA substrate22, the electronic components34ato34ecan be mounted on both surfaces of the circuit board22.
