ABSTRACT:
The orientation of a machine2relative to a work-piece10is manually controlled by means of an alignment device4. The device4includes a light source24rigidly attached to a foot12that is resiliently movably attached to the main body18of the device. The body18of the device4houses a light detector26for detecting a light beam from the light source24, the position of the region on the detector26illuminated by the beam depending on the orientation of the machine2relative to the work-piece10. The operator is provided with feedback on whether the machine2is correctly aligned with a target orientation (usually perpendicular to the surface) and concerning the direction of corrective movement required, if any.
