ABSTRACT:
An ophthalmic formulation is described containing at least one pharmaceutically active substance, purified water, and an amount of gelling agent effective to form an aqueous gel. The gel has a viscosity of from 75,000 to 3,000,000 centipoise and does not contain an oil phase. The pharmaceutically active substance is solubilized in the formulation. The gelling agent consists essentially of cellulose or a water soluble cellulose derivative.
