An improved 1-step process is disclosed for the preparation of thixotropic overbased calcium sulfonate complex thickened compositions containing calcium sulfonate as the dispersing agent and containing CaCO.sub.3 in the form of calcite crystals in colloidal or extremely finely divided form.
