ABSTRACT:
This invention relates to new 5-alkylsulfonylsalicylanilides and methods for their use. More particularly, the invention relates to compounds of the formula: ##STR1## Wherein Z is a substituted or unsubstituted phenyl ring of from 6 to 30 carbon atoms including substituents, R is a substituted or unsubstituted alkylsulfonyl group of from 1 to 20 carbon atoms including substitutents; and X is a radical selected from the group consisting of --CN, --NO.sub.2, --H, halogen, lower alkyl or lower haloalkyl.
The above compounds and compositions containing them are effective antiseptics against a wide range of microorganisms, especially bacteria, and are surprisingly highly effective against microorganisms, particularly S. mutans, prevalent in dental plaque.
