ABSTRACT:
A nonlinear optical polymer material comprising at least one polymer selected from the group consiting of polyimides, acrylic resins and benzocyclobutene resins containing, as a guest molecule, as a side chain, or in the main chain, a molecule or a chemical moiety having a basic structure of merocyanine dye represented by the formula (I): ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, R.sup.4, and R.sup.5 independently represent hydrogen or an organic group, provided that R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 or R.sup.3 and R.sup.5 may independently combine together to form an organo ring structure, and n is an integer of 1 to 3.
