DESCRIPTION:

BRIEF SUMMARY
This application is a 371 of PCT/JP95/00230 filed Feb. 17, 1995.

FIELD OF THE INVENTION

The present invention relates to novel nitrogen-containing cyclic compounds and selective herbicides containing the nitrogen-containing cyclic compounds as active ingredients.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

It is well known that a particular nitrogen-containing cyclic compound having a cyclic amide or urea structure in its ring has herbicidal activity. It is, for example, described in JP-A-49-132073, JP-A-54-70283, JP-A-57-139069, JP-A-58-140078, JP-A-3-176475, JP-A-3-204855, JP-A-4-89485, JP-A-5-201811, JP-A-5-221972, JP-A-5-221973, JP-A-6-25160 and JP-A-6-234763; EP-A-372586, EP-A-557691 and EP-A-600507; U.S Pat. No. 3272842, U.S. Pat. No. 3334098 and U.S. Pat. No. 5076832; DE-4213026; and WO 93/15064 and WO 94/13665.
However, each of the compounds disclosed therein is not necessarily satisfactory as a herbicide, and is thus desired to be improved in herbicidal activity and crop selectivity.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

The present invention provides nitrogen-containing cyclic compounds represented by the formula (1) (hereinafter referred to as compounds of the present invention), herbicides containing the said compounds and a process for controlling weeds by using them: ##STR2## wherein R.sup.1 represents a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl group; represents a hydrogen atom or a methyl group); -C.sub.7 cycloalkyl, C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 alkenyl or C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 alkynyl group, or an optionally substituted phenyl, naphthyl or heterocyclic group; C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 alkenyl group, or an optionally substituted phenyl or thienyl group; a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl, C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 alkenyl or C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 alkynyl group) or NR.sup.2 (wherein R.sup.2 is the same meaning as defined above), or an oxygen or sulfur atom, or SO or SO.sub.2 ; (wherein R.sup.5 represents a hydrogen atom or a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl group) or NR.sup.5 (wherein R.sup.5 is the same meaning as defined above); A.sup.3 represents a single bond or an oxygen or sulfur atom, and may have one or two double bonds within the ring when A.sup.3 represents CR.sup.5 or NR.sup.5 (wherein R.sup.5 is the same meaning as defined above), provided that the compounds are excluded in which both of A.sup.2 and A.sup.3 represent oxygen atoms, and in which A.sup.3 represents a single bond, A.sup.1 represents a carbon atom, A.sup.2 represents CR.sup.2 (wherein R.sup.2 is the same meaning as defined above), A.sup.1 and A.sup.2 are bonded through a double bond, Q.sup.2 represents a C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl, C.sub.3 -C.sub.7 cycloalkyl, C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 alkenyl group or an optionally substituted phenyl group, and Q.sup.1 represents a hydrogen atom or a C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl, C.sub.3 -C.sub.7 cycloalkyl, C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 alkenyl, C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 alkynyl group or an optionally substituted phenyl group.
Preferred compounds of the formula (1) include those represented by the formula (1-a): ##STR3## (wherein R.sup.1, X and Q.sup.1 are the same meanings as defined above; R.sup.2 represents a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl group; and Q.sup.2 represents an optionally substituted phenyl or thienyl group), those represented by the formula (1-b): ##STR4## (wherein R.sup.1, X and Q.sup.1 are the same meanings as defined above; R.sup.2 represents a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl group; and Q.sup.2 represents an optionally substituted phenyl or thienyl group), those represented by the formula (1-c): ##STR5## (wherein R.sup.1, X and Q.sup.1 are the same meanings as defined above; R.sup.2 represents a hydrogen atom or a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl group; Q.sup.2 represents an optionally substituted phenyl or thienyl group; and n represents 1 or 2), those represented by the formula (1-d): ##STR6## (wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R, X, Q.sup.1 and Q.sup.2 are the same meanings as defined above), those represented by the formula (1-e): ##STR7## (wherein R.sup.1, X, R and Q.sup.1 are the same meanings as defined above; Q.sup.2 represents an optionally substituted phenyl or thienyl group; and r represents 0, 1 or 2), and those represented
