ABSTRACT:
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of New Guinea Impatiens plant, botanically known as
Impatiens hawkeri
and hereinafter referred to by the cultivar name Balcebhopi.
The new Impatiens is a product of a planned breeding program conducted by the Inventor in Arroyo Grande, Calif. The objective of the breeding program was to develop new compact cultivars with freely-branching growth habit, numerous large flowers, and attractive flower and foliage colors.
The new Impatiens originated from a cross made by the Inventor of the
Impatiens hawkeri
cultivar Grenada, disclosed in U.S. Plant Pat. No. 9,343, as the male, or pollen parent, with the proprietary selection of
Impatiens hawkeri
identified as code No. 916 as the female, or seed parent. The cultivar Balcebhopi was discovered and selected by the Inventor as a flowering plant within the progeny of the stated cross in a controlled environment in Arroyo Grande, Calif. in 1997. Plants of the new Impatiens and the cultivar Grenada differ primarily in flower color.
Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar by terminal cuttings taken at Arroyo Grande, Calif., has shown that the unique features of this new Impatiens are stable and reproduced true to type in successive generations of asexual reproduction.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘Balcebhopi’. These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘Balcebhopi’ as a new and distinct cultivar:
1. Dark pink-colored flowers.
2. Upright and mounded plant habit.
3. Good basal branching.
4. Dark green leaves.
The new Impatiens can be compared to the cultivar, BFP-368 Rose, disclosed in U.S. Plant Pat. No. 9,532. However, in side-by-side comparisons conducted by the Inventor in Arroyo Grande, Calif., plants of the new Impatiens differ from plants of the cultivar BFP-368 Rose in the following characteristics:
1. Plants of the new Impatiens are more taller and more vigorous than plants of the cultivar BFP-368 Rose.
2. Plants of the new Impatiens and the cultivar BFP-368 Rose differ in stem color.
3. Plants of the new Impatiens have larger leaves with longer petioles than plants of the cultivar BFP-368 Rose.
4. Plants of the new Impatiens are not as freely flowering as plants of the cultivar BFP-368 Rose.
