ABSTRACT:
An improved feedstock for carbon artifact manufacture, especially carbon fiber production, is made by reacting a carbonaceous isotropic graphitizable pitch with a dealkylation catalyst in the presence of an organic solvent system having a solubility parameter at 25.degree. C. of between about 8.0 to about 9.5 to provide a solvent insoluble fraction over and above that originally in the pitch which is suitable for carbon artifact manufacture.
