Nematic liquid crystalline 4,4'-substituted derivatives of cyclohexene-1-carboxylic acid phenylthiol esters represented by the general formula ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 is a linear alkyl group containing 3 to 7 carbon atoms, and R.sub.2 is a linear alkoxy group containing 2 to 5 carbon atoms.
