A nematic liquid crystal mixture having a birefringence .increment.n of at least 0.20, comprising at least one fluorinated terphenyl of formula I and at least one fluorinated terphenyl of formula II ##STR1## wherein R and R' are each independently of one another or alkyl of up to 12 C atoms, optionally substituted by halogen, CH.sub.2 group optionally replaced, in each case independently of one another, by --O--, ##STR2## in such a manner that oxygen atoms are not linked directly to one another,
