ABSTRACT:
A method and system for reducing the actual bandwidth required for the transmission of signals which are inherently time and frequency division multiplexed, e.g. human speech signals, input signals of the above type lying within a first fractional bandwidth portion are converted to equivalent signals lying within a second fractional bandwidth portion lying outside the first fractional bandwidth portion, and both the coverted equivalent signals and the input signals originally lying within the second fractional bandwidth portion are continuously applied to a transmitter device for communication over a suitable link to a receiving station, the equivalent signals received by the receiving station are reconverted to signals lying within the first fractional bandwidth portion and are continuously applied to a receiver device along with those received signal portions originally lying within the second fractional bandwidth portion, the step of converting is performed by modulating the input signals with a carrier signal to generate the equivalent signals lying within the second fractional bandwidth portion. The step of reconverting the equivalent received signals is similarly performed, for input signals having different average power levels in the first and second fractional bandwidth portions, the different average power levels are substantially equalized prior to transmission, and the average power level of such received signals is altered to substantially restore the original power level difference.
