ABSTRACT:
Na.sup.+ -conducting glass and glass-ceramic of the composition comprising aNa.sub.2 O, bSiO.sub.2, cM.sub.2 O.sub.3, dM'O.sub.2 and eM"O wherein, based on the combined molar amounts totaling 100%, a is 32-41 mole %, b is 50-58 mole %, the ratio a/b is 0.575/1 to 0.760/1, c is 0-8 mole %, d is 0-7 mole %, e is 0-17 mole %, 2c+d+e is at least 8.7 mole %, M is one or more elements selected from the group consisting of the rare earth elements, yttrium and iron, M' is Zr or Hf and M" is Mg, Ca, Sr or Ba, Na.sup.+ -conducting composition having the substantially cubic crystalline structure of the formula Na.sub.9-x-n-z/2 M.sub.1+x/3-2y-n-z/2 M'.sub.y+n M".sub.y+z Si.sub.6 O.sub.18 wherein M, M' and M" are as defined above, x is 0 to 1.5, y is 0 to 0.5, z is 0 to 2.0, n is 0 to 0.5, y+n.ltoreq.0.5 and y+z.ltoreq.2.0 and the use of said glass, glass-ceramic and crystalline cubic material as a solid electrolyte.
