A fixed position remote control unit20as used with a movable barrier operator11has an externally accessible plug-in module interface25. This interface25operably couples to the link23and24between the remote control unit20and the operator11. So configured, a plug-in module40that docks and couples with this plug-in module interface25can receive operating (or charging) power from the movable barrier operator11, exchange signaling with the movable barrier operator11, or both. The ability to readily exchange signaling without invasive wiring permits a wide variety of plug-in modules40to be utilized.
