ABSTRACT:
A ceramic refractory mold protection device for an ingot mold having a flat top surface with a hole therethrough includes a shank portion which fits in the hole an integral head portion which is adapted to rest on the flat top surface and cover the impact area onto which steel is teemed. The head portion extends between 1 and 3 inches from the shank and is between 3/4 and 2 inches high. After the steel is poured and the ingot stripped from the mold, the protective device is removed from the mold and replaced by a new one for the next pour.
