When used prophylactically, the piracetam-containing preparation is applied during the prodromal phase of a herpes recurrence at the site of previous eruptions. When used for treatment purposes, the piracetam-containing preparation is initially applied within six to twelve hours of the appearance of the herpetic lesions and application is continued at set intervals until the lesions disappear.
