A technique is provided for automatically and visually generating a display rule for a structured document based on an exemplary operation. Base display rule generation means21generates a first display rule29, which is a base, by using a document type definition27for a structured document26and a default generation rule28that is determined in advance. Display document generation means22employs the first display rule29and the structured document26to generate a first display document30and an element correlation file31. Tie first display document30is edited in a display document visual editing environment23, and a second display document32and an editing operation history file33are generated. Display rule updating means24refers to the second display document32, the editing operation history file33, the element correlation file31and the structured document26to generate a second display rule34that reflects the editing contents.
