ABSTRACT:
A solution containing nitrate ion and other anions is contacted with a bifunctional styrene-divinylbenzene three-dimensional copolymer for selectively removing the nitrate ion. The copolymer contains phosphonate and amino groups of the following formulas: ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 stand, independently from each other, for a hydrocarbyl group, and ##STR2## wherein R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 stand, independently from each other, for hydrogen or an alkyl group with the proviso that R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 do not represent hydrogen at the same time.
