ABSTRACT:
Preparing comenic acid by heating 2,5-diketo-gluconic acid at a temperature within the range of 8.degree.-120.degree. C. and at a pH below 0.1. .alpha.-pyrone derivatives are formed as by-products, and comenic acid is separated therefrom by utilizing the solubility differences between the .alpha.-pyrone derivatives and comenic acid.
