ABSTRACT:
A method of preparing an amino alcohol of the formula ##STR1## where R.sub.1 is H, lower alkyl or R.sub.2, R.sub.2 is R.sub.3 CHOH in which R.sub.3 is H, alkyl or aryl. R.sub.3 preferably is hydrogen, lower alkyl or monocyclic aryl such as phenyl. The inventive method involves the reaction of halonitroalcohol with hydrogen in the presence of methanol, a suitable buffering agent such as ammonia, and a hydrogenation catalyst to form amino alcohol salt, neutralizing the amino alcohol salt, and recovering the resultant amino alcohol.
