ABSTRACT:
A process for the production of high purity, high surface area, submicron size transition metal carbides and borides which comprises mixing transition metal oxide with carbon in an amount sufficient to form the corresponding carbide or boride, heating the reactants at a temperature of higher than 1000.degree. C. under a small pressure of non-reacting gas and then holding the temperature whilst applying simultaneously subatmospheric pressure and agitation until the reaction is complete.
