ABSTRACT:
Disclosed is a process for preparing fluorescent inorganic glasses containing Nd.sub.2 O.sub.3 as a fluorescent species and containing MnO as a sensitizer but containing essentially no higher oxides of manganese. In the disclosed process an internal reducing agent is employed in the melting of the glass and such agent reduces the higher oxides of manganese upon cooling of the melt.
