ABSTRACT:
A method for slitting and sealing a lamination having a polyethylene layer and a coextruded film having a nylon.TM. layer. The improvement comprises slitting and sealing the two films with a laser generated light beam. The films are co-wound such that the coextruded film is closest to the laser. The laser slits the coextruded film first and thereafter the lamination. The polyethylene side of the lamination is positioned closest to the laser and is slit prior to other layers of the lamination. The method allows the polyethylene more time to absorb the energy from the laser and takes advantage of the efficient energy absorbing characteristics of the nylon.TM. in the coextruded film, resulting in improved slitting and sealing rates.
