Plant growth is regulated, e.g., inhibited, by applying to a plant or its habitat a composition containing as an active ingredient a phospholenium salt of the formula ##STR1## in which R.sup.1 is alkyl, substituted alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl, aralkyl substituted in the aryl part, alkoxy, substituted alkoxy, alkylthio or substituted alkylthio,
